Name: Self Portrait with a Sunflower
Artist: Anthony Van Dyck Date: 1632 Medium: Oil, Canvas Dimensions: 73 x 60 cm In this art project we are doing surrealism. I chose to do my piece in clay because I figured it would capture most of the details and be easier to form what I wanted to do with my own hands. I chose the heads in the pea pod because I liked how they were so different and out of the ordinary. I did the different faces also to show different themes in the subject. Making this project out of the ordinary.
What was hard about creating this artwork was the details in all the heads. I had no idea what the heads were gonna be nor what they were gonna look like, so I really just did what came to my mind. What was I thinking when I started my art piece? Well I was really just doing what came to my mind. Which was the whole point of surrealism. To capture something out of the ordinary, something out of your mind. I really liked this art work because I really had to think about it before I decided what I was going to do. The hardest part of this art I think would have been the details in the faces. I had a hard time detailing the heads because they were so tiny. The pea pod really was just another way of trying to find a place to hold all of the heads in. At first I was just gonna mash them all together but then I got to thinking, why not make it something cute. Name: Old woman frying eggs
Artist: Diego Velazquez Year made: 1618 Media: Oil paint Dimensions: 3' 3'' x 5' 7'' (99 cm x 1.69 m) This art project was all about light. I chose the peacock feather because it reminded me of how pretty but yet not heavy they are. I chose the print art because I liked how the peacock feather looked on it. I chose to do two different colors because the feather itself is not just one color. Mixing two colors made it actually three colors blue, pink, and purple.
I created this art piece because it reminded me of my grandma's farm. She use to always raise peacocks and I remember picking them off of the ground. I use to have picked up handfuls of the feathers and remembering how light they were no matter how many you picked up. This art work was quite hard to do, because I had to dig out a lot but still make it look thin. I messed up on a few pieces but in the end I liked how it turned out. I really liked this art piece in the end. It reminds me of my past and how free it use to be. It also reminds me of my sisters wedding when the hall was all decorated with peacock feathers. I was in charge of all the feathers and placing them on the tables. When I look at this piece I imagine dropping the feather from high above and how lightly it would fall down. Year made: 1668 Materials: Oil and canvas Dimensions: 50 cm x 45 cm (20 in x 18 in) The artwork was based on sound. It was suppose to reflect silence on a mountain. In my artwork I painted the background many colors to identify the scene as morning when the sky is the prettiest. I used black to paint the deer and the mountain, because it makes the sky pop out a little more. On this piece I had to be more detailed with the deer. I did not get it exactly the same as the original, but it was close enough.
I created this art piece, because deers remind me of silence. Always having to wait for the deer while hunting inspired me do paint this. I wanted to convey the peaceful kind of emotion so that when someone looks at it they think of wind and nature. What was hard about creating this artwork was the deer. I had no idea how to approach painting the deer or were to start. I had to e very detailed in painting the deer, making sure not to make the deer to fat or the horns to small. I used acrylic paint on this piece because I felt the background would be easier to paint by using these. I thought it was a good idea to use this material because it dried faster than oil paint. In all I really liked this piece because of the deer. It brings me back to when I would sit in the deer stand and want in silence for the deer. I had a difficult time getting the picture to look exactly like the one I found. I also had a hard time with the sky, because blending it while it was drying I had to do it really fast. 1. Which artwork was your most successful?I think the flight artwork was my most successful because, it was my most thought out art piece. I was not sure I could do the painting at first. I wanted to see if it would actually turn out good. So I remembered the video I had watched about oil painting and put my ideas down on the board. I believe that this piece was the hardest but, the most easiest at the same time. 2. Discuss one project where you felt you overcame most obstacles? The man vs machine project I could say was the most difficult to do. I had no idea how to start out my art work. I knew I needed help with drawing the eyes so I figured why not base this project off of that. I needed lots of help so, the teacher had art books to look at. This helped me out a bunch on the project. I had ended up drawing a half human/ half robot head. The background was kind of a rushed background so this did not turn out so well as I had hoped. In all I could say this project I had to overcome lots of obstacles. 3. What 2 pieces show your growth as an artist? The first piece was the environment project. We had only gotten a slight explanation of how to do the scratch boards and I was not sure if I could do them. I wound up doodling on one and found out that I really liked it. I had incorporated a bunch of different drawings on one poster board. I could say this project helped my artistic abilities grow by doing something I thought I couldn't do at first. The second piece was the flight project. I had no idea what I was doing with this. I had only watched a video in one of my classes about it. So I went off on a limb and decided I was going to take the chance and try oil painting. It was not easy at first but, I think I overcame that once it started blending together right. It helped me grow as an artists because, I did something that I had only learned on a video. 4. This semester I introduced a new way of teaching/learning. Students had more choices in subject matter and material choice. Explain how effective this was to you? This was very effective to me because, I was trying things I had never tried before. I was oil painting and we had never even learned about that yet. I think providing the students with more open options was a great idea. Helping them learn things and do things they never thought they could do. In my opinion I had learned more by doing different options than I did in just following one art material. I think most of the projects I did I had no idea if i could do them are not. In the end most of my projects had turned out great!
Artists Develop Art making SkillsI think from the beginning I was never really sure what to do about art. Being in this class helped me develop so many skills. I have surly progressed greatly since starting in this class. I learned many new techniques that I will surly be using in the near future. Like the scratch board, it was really hard at first to do. After a while I finally got the hang of it. Artists Take RisksA lot of drawings that I did in class I wasn't so sure I could do. I took the chances and went for a lot of them. Finding out that I could draw better than I can paint. Water colors was a huge risk taker. I had no Idea how easy it could be to paint with it.
